LEVI
In the midst of an unspoilt Arctic wonderland lies the exotic Lappish resort of Levi. Renowned as one of Finland's best and most extensive ski areas, it offers year-round hospitality, an excellent location and snow-sure skiing from November to May and a warm friendly atmosphere ideal for an all-round winter holiday. In addition to the international FIS and World Cup standard skiing centre.
Levi offers opportunities for a variety of sports, from golf to kick-sled safaris and horseback riding to hunting and mountain biking. For those seeking more unique winter wonderland experiences, Levi has a host of offerings including husky, reindeer or snowmobile safaris, visits to meet Santa, gold panning, rapid shooting, survival skill contests and a chance to see the magical Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).
During the warmer months, it’s a great place to enjoy some Finland golf, not to mention other activities like cycling, white-water rafting, fishing and so much more. Great restaurants, a lively nightlife and apres-ski scene, and a nearby airport in Kittila help to make Levi Finland the most famous ski destination in the country. The unique cultural evolution of Levi up to the present day is reflected in Sammun Tupa and the Lapp village in Levi. Tourists can visit the St. Mary's Chapel at Levi. It is the spirit of the fell village. Levi culture is multi-hued and sparkling with so much to offer to the tourists, never ceasing to amaze. In March and April daylight hours are longer than in the UK, temperatures rise and snow conditions are at their best, although, whatever time of year you visit you will be captivated by the magical and untouched natural splendour of Lapland.
At the moment, half a million travellers visit Levi each year, a quarter of which come from abroad. Based on hotel stays, Levi was the largest travel resort in Finland between January and April 2008. Growth from the previous year was strongest at Levi (+27.8%). The number of international guests staying in hotels was 124,600, an increase of 32.9%
"The best feature of Levi is its location: in the North and near an airport. As the snow-covered area shifts north, charter flights fly further, and travellers appreciate the fact that the destination is within easy reach. A direct flight takes you near the resort."
Mr. Vesa Heikkinen, Research Manager, Lapland Travel
Levi is one of the largest ski resorts in Finnish Lapland. The resort is located in Kittilä municipality and is served by Kittilä Airport and Kolari train station. The Levi fell is 531 meters above sea level. There are 48 skiing slopes (15 of which are floodlit) and 26 skiing lifts in Levi. Levi is another of the two sites of gondola lifts in Finland. The slopes in Levi are mostly suitable for beginners or intermediates, but there are also four black slopes for experts. The highest vertical drop is 325 meters and the longest slope is 2,500 meters long. The longest ski lift is about 1,636 meters long. Levi has one superpipe, one halfpipe, two snow parks, 10 children's slopes and seven slope restaurants. The skiing and snowboarding season in Levi is very long, lasting, perhaps, from mid October to the beginning of June. Other possible activities in Levi are cross-country skiing, snowmobile safaris, biking, husky dog safaris, fishing, hiking and canoeing. There are 230 kilometres of cross-country skiing tracks and 750 kilometres of snowmobiling tracks in Levi. Those looking for peace of mind can take snow shoes and walk to the nearest fell, Kätkätunturi. Kätkätunturi is located west of Levitunturi and it is 504,6 m high and 7 km long. Levi has been chosen the best domestic skiing resort in Finland four times[citation needed]. Near the ski resort of Levi is the Snow Village Lainio, where it is possible to see snow buildings.
